WHAT IS A CRISIS
AND ITS OUTCOMES?
“At WCFS we define a crisis as
an uncertain and transitional moment
in an individuals, life due to internal
and external factors. If these factors
and transitional moments are not identified
the individual will experience physical
and/or emotional harm. ”
CRISIS SUPPORT PROGRAM
The WCFS Crisis Support Program is a system
that is designed to support the efficient
operation of a Multi-disciplinary team
which is responsible for caring for vulnerable
and marginalized young people in need
of specialized services. This support
program has been developed as a result
of years of practical experience within
the Children & Youth Services Sector.
The WCFS Crisis Support Program is available
for educational milieus.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Through obtaining The WCFS Crisis Support
Program your staff team will have access
to support in working through various
crises with the students they provide
services for. The WCFS Crisis Support
Program is implemented by professionals
who are formally trained in preventing
and intervening during, prior and after
a crisis. The professionals are responsible
for
- Consulting and collaborating
resources with the existing team of professionals
- Identifying crisis
signs
- Counseling through
Pre-Crisis, Crisis, and Post Crisis Stages
- Utilizing various
Crisis Intervention methods based on
the needs of the student in need of service,
and your establishments mandated intervention
methods: Verbal De-escalation counseling,
last resort Physical Containment (If
student’s plan allows for this
process only)
- Referrals
- Liaise with community
professionals and families of the student
- Needs Assessment
HOW DOES YOUR TEAM
BENEFIT?
It is evident that when teachers are working
with a student in need who experiences
a state of crisis, they are also at risk
of experiencing the same, if they are not
formally trained to manage it. The results
of the teachers going into a state of crisis
may be extremely tragic. A crisis may displace
a teacher from an existing classroom when
the students need them the most. This situation
occurs when sufficient support systems
are not in place and teachers/educational
assistants need to move to a location or
setting which requires their support. At
WCFS we considered this dillema and others
like it when we developed the Crisis Support
Program. This program along with other
external factors provides a healthy and
intact environment for your boards’ faculty
to meet the students’ academic needs.
HOW DOES YOUR STUDENTS
IN NEED BENEFIT?
The students in need of services that your
board serves are entitled to a specialized
support system, due to their current condition
or mental/physical state. These young people
are entitled to receive professional support
from a program which is available for them
in case of a crisis. This program will
benefit the students through the proceeding
skills that WCFS Crisis Support Workers
possess
- Interpersonal Counseling
