Skill Development & Applied Mind
Theory
Introduction:
Individuals with special needs specifically
persons with Autism and Asperger’s
Syndrome lack social skills, this deficit
seriously affects their adaptive behavior
skills. Children with special needs even
when linguistically competent display
poor pragmatic skills, which lead to
deficits in socialization resulting in
social isolation and depression. Social
impairments are universal to the Autism
Spectrum Disorders.
Most children with special
needs demonstrate deficits in social interaction,
verbal and nonverbal communication, emotional
skills, cognitive abilities, and other
adaptive behavior skills. In addition these
individuals will often experience unusual
responses to sensory experiences such as
certain sounds or the way objects appear.
Each of these symptoms range from mild
to severe.
What is Theory of
Mind?
Theory of Mind refers to the notion that
many individuals with Autism do not understand
that other people have their own plans,
thoughts, and points of view. Furthermore
it appears that they have difficulty understanding
other people’s beliefs, attitudes
and emotions.
