Introduction:
Individuals with special needs specifically
persons with Autism and Asperger’s
Syndrome lack social skills, this deficit
seriously affects their adaptive behavior
skills. Children with special needs even
when linguistically competent display
poor pragmatic skills, which lead to
deficits in socialization resulting in
social isolation and depression. Social
impairments are universal to the Autism
Spectrum Disorders.
Most children with special
needs demonstrate deficits in social interaction,
verbal and nonverbal communication, emotional
skills, cognitive abilities, and other
adaptive behavior skills. In addition these
individuals will often experience unusual
responses to sensory experiences such as
certain sounds or the way objects appear.
Each of these symptoms range from mild
to severe.
What is Theory of
Mind?
Theory of Mind refers to the notion that
many individuals with Autism do not understand
that other people have their own plans,
thoughts, and points of view. Furthermore
it appears that they have difficulty understanding
other people’s beliefs, attitudes
and emotions.
Program Outline:
Considering specific needs of the people
with special needs specifically individuals
with Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome,
the Wholistic Skill Development and Applied
Mind Theory Program is designed to develop
their social, emotional and communication
skills. The domains of the program consist
of; hidden curriculum, (assumed knowledge
and expectations that are not directly
taught because they are thought to be
universally known) emotions, manners,
friendship, peer awareness, concept of
private and public, and sexuality.
Program Design:
Activities are designed to help individuals
understand the emotions of others, through
including instructions in recognizing
facial expressions from photos and videos,
and identifying social and emotional
situations from newspapers, magazines
and video clips. It offers instructions
in a simple visual form, believing that “SEEING
LEADS TO KNOWING”.
